Senior Aircraft Stress Engineer

About the position

Acts as a technical lead to the engineering team to ensure that engineering design, analysis and service documentation are compliant and approvable by aviation regulator(s) and usable by the end customer. Directs team members, reviews and internally approves documentation, including analyses, and develops internal tools to solve analysis needs. Current focus will be on the development of Sine Draco’s A321 Passenger to Freighter Conversion Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Technically manage the engineering team both internally and externally (outside resources)
• Develop and maintain report completion plans and solve open issues to ensure on-time completion

• Act as static and fatigue/damage tolerance analysis SME
• Oversee static and fatigue/damage tolerance analysis performed by team
• Manage technical requirements for analysis, vendors
• Provide technical direction to vendors to ensure usable design and reports are provided
• Oversee design of modifications from a stress & continuing airworthiness perspective
• Review and internally approve static and fatigue/damage tolerance reports and downstream documents
• Ensure the design meets regulations and is usable for operators
• Liaise with regulators and ODA Unit Members as necessary
• Develop and maintain internal tools for stress team use
• Oversee and direct testing activities, including FEM validation
• Obtain approval for post-STC repairs and deviations

• Ensure certifiable and complete packages are submitted for aspects of engineering STC projects under multiple regulatory agencies
• Assist in planning and directing continued airworthiness support of STC products
• Manage and/or provide DER / UM support for STC and post STC activities

Skills and Qualifications

At a minimum, the candidate should possess the following skills and qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Engineering or equivalent
• 10+ years related experience
• Strong classical hand analysis background
• Experienced with performing fatigue and DT analysis without manufacturer tools/methods
• Familiar with NASGRO/AFGROW & LEFM
• Familiar with nondestructive test/inspections
• Knowledge of metallic aircraft repair methodology
• Finite element modeling and validation
• Knowledge of regulatory FAA Part 25 / EASA CS 25 requirements and airworthiness process
• Previous structural STC and/or cargo aircraft conversion experience preferred
• Knowledge of OEM Maintenance, Operational, and Repair Manuals
• General familiarity with 3D Computer Aided Drafting/Design (CATIA V5 preferred)
• Office 365

The ideal candidate would also possess many of the following skills and experience:
• Proficient with FEMAP/NX Nastran
• Computer programming for engineers (FORTRAN & VBA or ability & desire to learn these languages)
• Familiar with commercial aircraft operations
• Significant experience with regulators (FAA/EASA) and substantiation of AMOC approvals
• Prior or current appointment as Structural DER, or DER candidate
